Homework [Due before class on October 9th] (The following assignment is intended to provide an overview of LAN networking). [e-mail your answers to summers_wayne@ColumbusState.edu before 11 a.m. MST, Tuesday, October 9th]
- Your organization has 12 employees, each with his or her own stand-alone PC running Windows 98. a) List all the additional hardware and software you would have to buy to install a simple PC network. Be very sure that you list all the things the organization will have to buy. The organization wishes to use electronic mail, word processing, file sharing, and print sharing with four existing printers. b) How many ports on the hub or switch will your organization use? Explain.
- Using the links at the Internet Exercise for this chapter, cost out the LAN you just specified. For installation labor, assume $125 per client PC or server. You do not have to cost out the application software. Be very specific. Cost out your system a) with a 10Base-T hub, b) with a 10Base-T switch, c) with a 100Base-TX hub, and d) with a 100Base-TX switch (if possible). (Note: 10/100 switches or hubs are 100 Mbps switches or hubs. They are more expensive than 10 Mbps switches or hubs.)
- In the opening vignette, Glenn Davis installed a small peer-peer PC network in his home. a) What benefits was he seeking? b) Did he get them? c) What problems did he run into installing the PC network? d) What problems did he run into using the PC network? e) Why don't we see more peer-peer PC networks in business?
