CS457/557 Computer Networks Spring 1997

PROJECTS

One of the major requirements for this course is a project on some aspect of computer networks. The project may be either a practical or a term paper. Listed below are some of the topics for the project. If you are taking this course for graduate credit, you will need to either do an additonal part to your project or do a second project. For the practical projects, you will be expected to give a brief presentation to the class on your project. and/or develop an HTML document. If you choose a term paper to write, you will need to turn in a copy to me for publication on the Internet and also make a brief presentation to the class. Some of the larger projects may be done in small groups, but I expect each participant to do a significant amount of the work.

Please see me about your selection of a project or e-mail me by Tuesday, Feb. 4. (NOTE: Graduate students will need to do one of each)
I will be available for help with this projects.

Network Practical Projects

1) Design Coordinator / Technical Assistant (choose one) for Netday at:
  1. Legion Park Elementary School - Mar. 8, 1997 - Lawrence Martinez
  2. Los Ninos Elementary School - April 19, 1997 - Doug Nordwall
  3. Sierra Vista Elementary School - April 19, 1997 - Amy Chavez
  4. Paula D. Henry Elementary School - April 19, 1997 - Alfred Murphy
  5. West Las Vegas Middle School - April 12, 1997 - Annabella Flores
  6. Union Elementary School - May 10, 1997 - Annabella Flores
  7. Valley Elementary and Middle Schools - ???? - Alfred Murphy
  • Netday Information

    2) Design Coordinator / Technical Assistant for CS Dept. Network

    3) Install the following Internet Servers on an NT computer: - Aaron Thronas / Eric Alarid

    1. Mail Server
    2. News Server
    3. Web Server
    4. Calendar Server
    5. Collabra Server
    4) Install two of the following Internet Servers on an UNIX computer: - David Reinsvold / Gwen Mascarenas (due May 1)
    1. Mail Server
    2. News Server
    3. Web Server
    4. Calendar Server
    5. Collabra Server
    5) We now have a copy of Novell Netware 4.1. This needs to be installed in the Dino Lab on a 5-computer system. This project would require installing the software on the computers and then setting up the fileserver and printservers. I anticipate the hardest part of this project will be getting Netware to work with Windows and TCP/IP. (BRYAN)(due April 24)

    6) Other project that we can agree on.

    Network Term Paper Topics

The paper should be a significant research of an important topic in computer networks. It should be 10-20 pages and involve research from the Internet as well as from books and periodicals.
    1. Transmission Control Protocol / Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) - this is a very important protocol and the basis of the Internet (Jason Alarid) (due May 1)
    2. Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN)
    3. Frame Relay System - This is the system that will soon be installed in Las Vegas and will allow many of the schools in the area to access the Internet via NMHU.
    4. Electronic Data Interchage (EDI) - this is an important protocol for the trasmission of data in the business world.
    5. Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) - network protocol that allows fast multimedia data transfer
    6. Switched Networks - Jennifer White (due April 29)
    7. Other approved topics.
