The unique IP address for each computer on the Internet can be broken up into a network portion and a host portion.

The first part of the IP address is the network portion. It contains the Internet address of the local network on which a computer sits. Every local network on the Internet has a unique network address.

The second part of the IP address is the host portion. It contains the identifying number of each individual computer on a given local network.
