Connected to the World

In the past, most computer networks were isolated. They maintained no connections to other computer networks nor to other computers outside their own network.

Starting in the 1980's people started connecting networks together all across the United States to form a large super network called the Internet.

This new super network grew exponentially. By the 1990's thousands of networks and millions of computers across the globe became linked to each other via the Internet.

Computers which were previously isolated on small networks were now connected to the world.
