NETWORKING GREGG HOUSE

Plans for Networking Gregg House

New Mexico Highlands University (NMHU) has two family housing units on its campus, Gregg House and Arrott House. NMHU plans to network both family housing units. The network design will be done in-house. The cable installation will be contracted out.

NMHU has elected to contract out the cable installation for two reasons: 1) Gregg House, as stated before, is constructed of concrete block, therefore, it will be difficult to install the network cables, and 2) NMHU would like to replace US West telephone lines with its own telephone lines. This will allow Gregg House and Arrott House to connect to the NMHU network in the same manner as other buildings on campus.

Description

Gregg house sits north of Melody Park and south of the Student Union Building. The three story building made of concrete block consists of three floors with a total of 32 two bedroom apartments, a laundry room, and a mechanical room. The first floor consists of 10 apartments, a laundry room, and a mechanical room. The second and third floors each consists of 11 apartments that are laid out identically.

Network Design

The network plan designed incorporates two drops for each apartment. One drop will run from the mechanical room, through the breeze way and along the front side of the building, above the doors and windows. The cable will enter near the dining room window. The second drop will run from the mechanical room, along the back side of the apartments. It will run up the center of the building and below the two bedroom windows. The cable will enter the apartment near one of the two bedrooms.

Networking Hardware and Other Materials

A list of networking hardware and miscellaneous materials necessary for networking Gregg House will be provided to Dr. Wayne Summers and Mr. Max Baca so that may purchase the required material. The cost for the materials will depend largely on NMHU's buying power and vendor relations.

Reevaluate the Network Design and Hardware Needs before proceeding.

Since the installation of the network cables will be contracted out, the network design may need to be modified, and the hardware and other material needs may need to be changed. It is recommended that the design and list of suggested hardware and other material be re-evaluated at the time of installing the network.
