CS456/556 - Internet Services - Week 7 Assignment

In-class Discussion
The following questions are for discussion this week -
  1. An agreement that specifies how two computers communicate is called a ___________________
  2. When IP software sends data to another computer, it always sends it in a packet called an _______ ________
  3. Computer scientists say that IP makes the Internet appear to be a ______________ network.
  4. When an IP datagram travels across the Internet, it passes through intermediate computers called _______________
  5. Each router uses the ___________ in a datagram to choose where to send the datagram next.
  6. Read more about IP datagrams. How large can a single IP datagram be?
  7. What information must appear in an IP datagram?
  8. Draw a picture to explain how a packet switching system can become congested.
  9. A _______________________ must discard additional datagrams that arrive after a network in the Internet becomes congested.
  10. Computers that use the Internet need _________________ software to handle the problems of congestion and packet loss.
  11. Internet communication software is named _______________ because IP and TCP are designed to work together.
  12. Does a user need to instruct TCP to resend a datagram that is lost?
  13. How long will TCP try to retransmit lost data before it gives up? To find out, conduct an experiment: arrange for two computers to begin communicating and then disconnect one of them.
  14. How many datagrams per second does it take to overrun a typical LAN? A typical LAN has a capacity of 10,000,000 bits per second, and a typical datagram is about 10,000 bits long.

Bulletin Board Discussion
[post your answers to the bulletin board for CS456/556 - Internet Services by 4:00 p.m. MDT/MST Monday, October 8]
Answer these questions in your own words.

  1. Does datagram loss occur frequently on the Internet? Use ping or a similar program to contact remote sites. Does the program ever report datagram loss?
  2. Do people ever use retransmission? (Hint: what does a company do if it does not receive payment after sending a bill?)
  3. If you wanted to send a series of weekly reports to another person but were concerned reports might be lost in the mail or that a secretary might become confused and send one of them twice, how could you ensure that a report arrived weekly?

Homework
(Due before class on October 8, 2001) TThe following assignment is intended to give you practice in the basics of Web / HTML Page design and HTML. [Post the pages to a webserver and send a message indicating the URL to the bulletin board by 4:00 p.m. Monday, October 8, 2001]

You are to create a web page with your resume on it. Be sure to review Creating an HTML Document and Advanced Publishing on the Internet before you start on your pages. Make your resume as fancy as possible using style sheets.
