The media that connects the servers and clients and allows them to communicate is usually cable. The media operates at the Physical layer of the OSI model.
The NIC is the interface between the client computer and the media.
In most LANs, hubs connect network segments together.
Hubs are the center of an Ethernet star network and function as repeaters. As such, they operate at the Physical layer, just like media does.
