The Virtual LAN spans a wider area with separate users appearing to all share the same LAN. Each VLAN segment can support between 1 and 100 users.
The structure of the VLAN is determined by OSI layer protocols and standards. On layer 1 the network can be defined by links associated with specific port groupings. Configuration takes place manual by connecting VLAN members through the port identified with that particular LAN. At layer 2 addressing elements (the MAC Addresses) are used to identify segment members. The ATM switch configures this type of VLAN. Layer 3 addressing uses IP addresses to identify group members. The configuration of this VLAN is done through a router equiped with an ATM card to resolve addresses and to interconnect with VLANs from other networks. |
