Frame Relay Complements Other Technologies
• Frame relay and ATM can support data, on-net voice, and packetized video. Both technologies support speeds from 1.5 Mbps up to 45 Mbps. However, frame relay is also defined at speeds below 1.5 Mbps and ATM beyond 45 Mbps. Because frame relay is defined below 1.5 Mbps, it is more suitable for remote sites, mobile workers, and telecommuters that have applications that do not have large bandwidth requirements. Larger locations such as regional sites and headquarters may need to implement higher speed frame relay ports or even ATM to support all communications to the remote locations.
Frame relay to ATM service interworking enables seamless communications between frame relay and ATM locations. The network provides the protocol conversion between the two technologies.
