CS 457/557: Computer Networks : MIS420/520 - Networking in a Business Environment Fall 1998 Summers

LAB ASSIGNMENT 2 - Installing a Peer-to-peer Network

You and your two partner(s) have just been hired by the FishNet Computer Company. If you have installed a network card, you may NOT touch the computer or card. You are to supervise and offer advice to your partners. Your first assignment to install a network on a computers in the Computer Networking Lab (SC103). You have one week to complete the assignment. Notify me by e-mail when you have completed the assignment. You will need to:
  1. install one of the provided network adapter cards (located next to your computer) in one of the computers that does not have a network card already installed.
  2. connect the computer to the LAN using the cables, terminators and Ts provided. If the card you install is a combo card (has an RJ45 connection), connect the computer to the network using UTP otherwise use 10Base2 cable.
  3. install the correct drivers for the network adapter card from '95 or the disk(s) provided.
  4. Make sure the name of the computer is correct.
  5. ensure that the Network Neighborhood is setup on the computer.
  6. Use Network Neighborhood to move the file NET-MAN.FIL from the share drive CS457 on my computer JARING to the temp directory of the PC that you have installed the network on.

Windows for Workgroups and Windows 95 are peer-to-peer networks. That means that they do not need a dedicated server to operate the network. WFWG and Win95 provide facilities for file sharing, print sharing, E-mail, groupware facilities like chat and group scheduling and security features like password facilities and a net watcher.

You will need to learn to use the Network Setup that allows you to select a network to use, set up file and print sharing and change network drivers. You will also need to use the Network option in Control Panel that allows you to change the computer name and workgroup, change the log on password and track how the shared resources are being used.

STEPS FOR SETTING UP A PEER-TO-PEER NETWORK

1) Install a network card and connect the computer to the network.
2) Set up WFWG and Win 95 (if necessary) using the set-up program.
You need to know beforehand the following:
  1. the type of network you want to run (if no other network software is installed, setup can install Microsoft Windows Network).
  2. the type of NIC you are using
  3. you may need to know the interrupt request level(IRQ), the base I/O port and the base memory address for your NIC (these will usually be detected by Setup)
  4. type of printer and its port (if you are setting up a printer).
3) To enable file and printer sharing -
  1. choose the Network Setup in the Network Group
  2. choose Sharing and then select the appropriate check boxes
  3. after selecting OK, you will be notified that the SYSTEMS.INI file has been modified and then you will be asked to restart Windows.
4) To share file resources,
  1. select the Connect Network Drive icon or choose Connect Network from the Disk menu [if the shared directories are not displayed, you will need to type the shared directory's path [e.g., \\JARING\CS457 ] or simply follow the path to the directory through Network Neighborhood
  2. select the computer to be linked to and enter the password if necessary
  3. click on the assigned drive for the connected computer
  4. to disconnect from the network drive, click the Disconnect Network Drive button or choose Disconnect Network Drive from the Disk menu.
