Port Numbers

Source and destination port numbers are also found in the addressing information of each IP packet. They serve two different functions.

The destination port number indicates which Internet application (service) created a particular IP packet. Every standard Internet application uses a pre-determined and fixed destination port number.

This number is different for different applications. For example, e-mail uses destination port number 25. The world wide web uses destination port number 80.
