LANE Overview

Members of this VLAN will be defined by the ATM switch. The ATM switch creates virtual connections for data transmission while emulating the nature of the LAN. The switch maps Mac Address-based data networking protocols on to the ATM virtual connections so that higher level protocols think they are running over a connectionless LAN. This occurs without any additional modification to the network operating system or in user applications, providing protocol independent connectivity.

Members join the LANE when a client requests generic ATM address from LAN Emulation Configuration server. The LECs assigns the client a position and creates an identity for that node on the LAN Emulation Server. This client profile is maintained in the server and assists in resolving the MAC Addresses into the ATM Address for data shipment across the network. The profile is accessed each time the client sends data onto the network.
