The Netscape AppFoundry program is open to developers who are willing to deliver useful intranet starter applications based on the Netscape ONE platform. As part of this program, other developers will be able to download, distribute and modify your application royalty-free. You can join the other innovative developers who created the initial applications and enjoy the support and increased marketing visibility that Netscape can provide. We first ask you to thoroughly review this process and the final checklist before signing up to the AppFoundry program.

PROCESS - ABBREVIATED SUMMARY

1. Start AppFoundry Participation Process - Developers should send their contact information to Netscape to start the process.
2. Download software, documentation and development tools - Now, download the appropriate documentation and software to set up the development environment. Also, developers should review some examples of AppFoundry applications.
3. Join DevEdge at the Community Level - Join the DevEdge Program at the Community Level for $95.
4. Complete AppFoundry Application Description Form and AppFoundry License Agreement - Once you are familiar with the development environment, complete and submit a description form and license agreement form. Netscape will need to review and accept these documents.
5. Utilize DevEdge development support as needed - Upon acceptance of both documents, the developer will be upgraded to the DevEdge Gold membership level. This level provides access to special support and information via DevEdge Online. Developers should explore this area as an additional resource before and during development.
6. Develop an AppFoundry Application for Review - This section provides the actual process and recommended timeline for delivering versions of an application to Netscape. A beta version and then final version of the application, along with the AppFoundry Final Checklist, should be submitted to Netscape. Then, the application is tested and "accepted" to post on the site.
7. Enter Application Description in Netscape ONE Directory - To promote your application on the AppFoundry site, the final step is to enter a thorough description in the Netscape ONE Directory.

2. DOWNLOAD SOFTWARE, DOCUMENTATION, AND DEVELOPMENT TOOLS

To begin familiarizing yourself with the development environment, download all of the tools and software needed (if you don't already have them). We encourage you to set up the development environment and review the Style Guide before you begin development. Note that all of the software is for 60-day evaluation. You can also purchase the Netscape software right now at our online General Store.

Style Guide
The Style Guide is a critical document containing User Interface recommendations, On-Line Help Subsystem, documention guidelines, configuration and installation recommendations, database and directory structure naming conventions. Adhering to the Style Guide is highly recommended to ensure your application is developed in a consistent and easy to understand format.

Informix On-Line Database (optional)
Informix provides an On-Line Knowledge Base to assist you in setting up the Informix database.

Netscape Enterprise Server
Documentation is included when you download the Enterprise Server. You'll also see a link on the download page for ordering a Test Drive CD, as an alternative to downloading.

Netscape LiveWire (optional)
For developing with the Netscape LiveWire tool, on-line documentation is also available for your convenience.

Setup Assistance
Refer to the Download and Setup Guide on the AppFoundry site for assistance on configuring Informix, Enterprise Server, and LiveWire. In addition to this guide, several resources include:

You are welcome to use existing applications as a respository of proven code to develop your applications, too. If you're developing from scratch and thinking about the type of application you might like to create, here are some good examples of Netscape AppFoundry applications:

3. JOIN DEVEDGE AT COMMUNITY LEVEL

If you are not already a member, you need to join the Netscape DevEdge Program at the Community Level or higher. The cost is $95 for a one year membership. You will receive a receipt on your computer screen once enrolled correctly into the program. You can immediately enter information on services and software your company currently provides in the online Netscape ONE Directory.

4. COMPLETE APPFOUNDRY APPLICATION DESCRIPTION FORM AND APPFOUNDRY LICENSE

After you have reviewed this step-by-step process guide and set up the development environment, please thoroughly complete the AppFoundry Application Description Form to give Netscape a clear understanding of your application and your development process. An example of a comprehensive application description is shown here for your reference. We will work with you on the description if needed. Submission instructions are provided on the Form.

Since your application description will be referenced as part of the license agreement, now is the time to request the Netscape AppFoundry License Agreement (see Overview of Requirements to Participate). To receive a copy of the agreement via fax please send an email request to appfoundry@netscape.com. Then sign and fax the agreement to Netscape at (415) 428-4008.

Once Netscape receives and accepts the signed Agreement and your completed AppFoundry Application Description Form, we will send you an email acknowledgement to this effect. Then, Netscape will countersign the Agreement and return a copy to you for your records.

5. UTILIZE DEVEDGE DEVELOPMENT SUPPORT AS NEEDED

Upon approval of your Agreement and Description Form, you will be granted a complimentary one-year upgrade to DevEdge Gold membership ($495 value). This will give you access to development support and technical resources through the Netscape DevEdge Program.

DevEdge Online features FAQs and newsgroups that cover Server Technical topics, Java, JavaScript, HTML, Internet Foundation Classes, LiveWire and many other topics.

6. DEVELOP AN APPFOUNDRY APPLICATION FOR REVIEW

The timeline to submit AppFoundry applications should follow a two-month rolling schedule. Netscape has provided a recommended timetable, however developers must designate their timeline for delivering an application in the signed license agreement. If at any time you have questions during the application development or delivery phases, please send us email at appfoundry@netscape.com.
Submit Beta Version of Application to Netscape
When you have completed most of your application functionality and are ready to get feedback, post the application outside of your firewall and send the URL to Netscape. We will review the application's functionality and user interface and give you feedback within 15 business days of receiving your email.

Submit Final Version of Application to Netscape
Your final application should incorporate the feedback from Netscape and any other additional enhancements. It should be submitted to Netscape within three weeks of receiving Netscape's feedback on your application Beta. Before submitting, please:

1. Package your application and documentation as a zip or tar file (per the style guide).
2. Complete and include the AppFoundry Final Application Checklist along with your application.

Submit these items to Netscape.

We will install the application at Netscape for testing. We will follow your README file exactly to install the application and will exercise all aspects of the application to ensure that it works properly per the product specificiation. Netscape will return feedback via email within 15 business days of receiving your application.

Netscape will post your application on the Netscape AppFoundry site, available through One Stop Software. We will notify you when the application is available for download.

7. ENTER APPLICATION DESCRIPTION IN NETSCAPE ONE DIRECTORY

To promote your application on the AppFoundry site, the final step is to enter a comprehensive description of application functionality and benefits in the Netscape ONE Directory. Netscape will provide assistance if needed to create an effective marketing message. (The process for entering the listing is under development.)

MARKETING BENEFITS TO PARTICIPATING IN THE NETSCAPE APPFOUNDRY PROGRAM

There are many benefits to participating in the Netscape AppFoundry program:
• Priority access to development tools and support - Developers are entitled to complimentary support, access to style guidelines, plus the numerous technical resources provided through the DevEdge program. Participation also includes testing and feedback by Netscape as part of the approval process. On signing an AppFoundry license agreement, developers receive a complimentary one-year Gold Level Membership in the Netscape DevEdge Program.
• Broad distribution through Netscape channels - Starter applications will be distributed broadly through many mechanisms and channels, including download from Netscape Internet sites (worldwide), bundled with Netscape Server products, quarterly distribution on an AppFoundry CD with other applications, international distribution, and distribution through Netscape OEMs such as HP, IBM, DEC, and Compaq. Of course you can also have your application downloadable and demoable on your own site as well.
• Co-marketing - Many current AppFoundry partners have enjoyed new consulting and development projects and leads as a result of co-marketing activities. Companies that submit applications will enjoy the following types of promotion without cost: online promotion of the AppFoundry program via the Netscape site, PR opportunities, advertising of the program, showcase opportunities on the Netscape Web site with case studies and customer stories, and extensive listings in the Netscape ONE Directory to highlight your application features and benefits as well as your company.
