The Informix Corporate Directory makes it easy for employees to locate other employees around the company, saving time and effort over paper-based or flat-file phone lists. Users can browse the directory through alphabetical links to last names or perform database searches to quickly pinpoint people. Once an employee profile has been located, the user can drill down to get more information, including a picture of the employee (optional) and a map to his or her building.

The INFORMIX-Universal Server database will extend this type of application to include complex data. With INFORMIX-Universal Server, for example, the application could store spatial information about the floor plan for a building. The user could then ask for all employees that had offices in a certain area of the building simply by drawing a rectangle on the floor plan using a Java applet. The Universal Server is the first enterprise-capable extensible relational database management system designed explicitly to handle rich, complex data types.
