Networking in the Business Environment, MIS 420/520 - FAQ
- What is the rule of thumb when adding memory to a computer. I have a 386 that
had 2 meg. I added 4 meg. Assuming that the motherboard could take more, how
would you proceed?
- What exactly is a router, switch, bridge?
- Can I use two net cards in the same computer? With Win 95?
- How can I network a computer with 10BaseT to a 10Base2 Network?
- The first step in improving networking performance is to identify the
bottle necks, what steps do you take after that? How bad can a bottle neck
mess up your work?
- Also, what exactly are disk controllers?
- Is there much of a difference between EISA buses and PCI buses?
- What are Primary and Secondary IDE Contollers?
- What are system integrators and VAR's?
- What is IMS? PnP? and IT Networking Station?

- How can I tell what kind of modem do I have in my personal computer
becaue when I long into Campus MCI is takes about 2 to 3 minutes to
get connected. Also could it be that I have a 486 computer?
- Why aren't more companies using the intranet system instead of using
the internet? Also I would like to know what it costs to use an intranet
system. Is it feasible for larger corporations to benefit from using an
intranet system.

their own? I am sure some companies used them sparingly, but when did they

- There's a big argument about Microsoft and how there is a large and fast
growing opposition to the strength and power which it has acquired, what do you
think Microsoft can, our should do to protect itself, and its image?
- Who is directly in charge of this lab, who should we contact with questions or
problems? Why doesn't the CS department have anyone who would be able and
willing to serve as lab attendants, not only in the lab in the Science bldg.,
but in all computer labs on campus?
- Could you explain an Extranet, one more time, and let us know how it works?
- Please explain exactly how a modem works?
- Why would you need 2 modems when connecting to the Internet from your home?
