I'm not aware of any studies but our philosophy here is to create labs first so that all classes have equal access, then create "technology-rich" classrooms. The teachers in these classrooms would need to justify having a number of machines in their classroom by creating projects/curriculum to support them.
Seems to be the best model I've seen and experienced.
