My Teaching Philosophy
"I hear and I forget, I see and I remember, I do and I understand." Chinese Proverb
"One must learn by doing the thing; for though you think you know it, you have no certainty until you try."Sophocles, The Women of Trachis
- We will communicate over the web. All information you need for due dates, assignments, readings, lectures, etc. are available on the class web site found at http://csc.ColumbusState.edu/summers/.
- I do not lecture. I expect you to have read the material. Class time will be used in answering questions about the material and in exercises that increase your understanding of the material
- I expect you to attend each class session having read the assignment and having answered the example questions.
- You cannot just read the text. You must actively engage yourself in the reading. Do not skip over items that you do not understand. If you do not understand something in the readings, ask questions about it.
- I encourage and expect you to ask questions. Students who do not involve themselves in the class will typically not do well.
- You will be expected to write a lot. Students who cannot write about a subject, do not understand the subject. You can expect a written assignment each week. I expect your assignments to be written well with correct spelling, punctuation and grammar.
- My classes use a lot of technology. You are expected to master using e-mail, Web browsers, word processors, document presentation software, as well as specific software for each course.
- I am a strong proponent of hands-on activities. You can expect to DO things in my classes that reinforce the material we are learning.
- You can expect to work hard in my class; but you can also expect to learn a lot if you do the work.
- I have an "open door" policy. If you are on campus, feel free to stop by my office anytime. In all cases, always feel free to e-mail or call me about any problems you may be having.
"When I hear somebody sigh, 'Life is hard,'
I am always tempted to ask, 'Compared to what?'" Syney J. Harris, Majority of One
