SGML (Standard Generalized Markup Language)

Before HTML there was SGML. SGML is an international standard for electronic document exchange. SGML is the basis of the highly popular HTML Internet standard (HyperText Markup Language). HTML 2.0 is a subset of SGML. With the Netscape and Microsoft extensions to HTML, HTML has diverged from the original SGML.
