When the IDF is directly connected to the MDF, the IDF is sometimes called the horizontal cross-connect (HCC).
This is because, in this configuration, the IDF is where the horizontal cabling connects to a patch panel whose backbone cabling connects to the hub in the MDF.
Horizontal cabling is most typically Category 5 UTP.
