MDFs and IDFs
The MDF is the central junction point for the wiring of a star topology.
Additional closets used to extend the star will typically house hubs. Recall that active hubs extend the star because they function as repeaters.
The additional closets are called Intermediate Distribution Facilities (IDFs).
The IDFs are dependent on the single MDF. IDFs are required when:
- The catchment area of the MDF is not large enough to capture all nodes.
- The LAN is in a multistory facility.
- The LAN encompasses multiple buildings.
