ARP Request Continued
The device that discovers the ARP request broadcast packet is destined for its IP address sends its MAC address.
Other devices on the local segment use the source MAC and IP information in the ARP request to update their own ARP tables.
The ARP process differs slightly when the hosts are on separate segments and is discussed later.
If the source computer only know the destination computer’s host name and not the IP address, the source must first obtain the destination IP address.
Although this is beyond the scope of this text, WINS would be a typical method of obtaining an IP address.
