CIDR Continued
InterNIC now assigns network addresses using the CIDR notation.
CIDR notation allows more flexibility in assigning addresses because they are not assigned along octet boundaries. In this way, InterNIC can match the number of subnets and hosts more closely with a company’s needs. This actually preserves IP addresses.
There is a new version of the Internet Protocol called IPv6. This allows for a 128-bit address and greatly expands the number of possible addresses on the Internet. However, it may be some time before IPv6 is in widespread use.
