Chapter Summary Continued
Surges and spikes are excess voltage conditions that can destroy electronic devices.
Surge suppressors can protect against over-voltage conditions. Surge suppressors use metal oxide varistors (MOV), which absorb excess voltage.
Sags and brownouts occur when less than normal voltage is available. Blackouts result from a complete loss of power.
UPS devices can regulate blackouts, brownouts, and sags. Some UPS devices operate online, thus providing continuous power to the devices they support.
SPS devices are only useful for power loss conditions and do not provide line conditioning.
