Chapter Summary
In order for packets to get from one host to another on an IP internetwork, a packet must have both IP and MAC addresses.
In order to resolve the IP addresses to MAC addresses, ARP is used.
ARP allows an IP host to broadcast an ARP Request packet to all hosts on a local subnet.
All the hosts evaluate the packet; the host with the same IP address as contained in the IP header sends an ARP Reply packet containing its MAC address.
In this way, the source of the ARP Request can properly address its packet and send it to the correct destination MAC address.
