Static Routing

• The advantages of static routing include:

  • Greater administrative control because each route is defined by the administrator
  • No increase in network traffic due to router table transfers
  • Preferred to connect stub networks, when there is only one path to the network from the router

• There are disadvantages to static router configuration:

  • Increased administrative overhead to create and maintain tables
  • Tables paths are not automatically modified based on increased traffic or network path problems
  • Chance of typos in routing tables
