Most entries are dynamic, meaning that the system performed IP to MAC mapping as needed by examining packets being transmitted on the network.
Static entries, which are rarely created, provide semi-permanent IP to MAC address mappings that are manually entered by an administrator.
An administrator makes manual mappings to reduce ARP traffic on the network and does so only when he or she is certain that a specific hardware address and IP address combination will remain constant.
