LAN Emulation is a virtual LAN that is constructed to run over an ATM network. It allows ATM bandwidth to be availible without modifying previously existing protocols, software or hardware. LANE standards provide a nonpropriatary method of communicating VLAN membership across the network. Basically the upper layer protocols continue to see all network traffic as LAN based traffic, incorporting standard LAN transmission protocols, while the ATM transport proceedures are operative but invisible to these other network layers and protocols. |
