II. Discussion questions.

41. You have been hired by Multimedia University and asked to develop a multimedia advertisement for them.

  1. Give a brief description of your multimedia presentation.
  2. Describe either an Internet or CD presentation

  3. Describe the hardware and software you will need to author this multimedia advertisement.
  4. Internet: Need multimedia PC including CD player, sound card, good video graphics for hardware including sound producing system; software needs include a web development tool (Homesite, Frontpage, Dreamweaver, etc.) plus sound and video editing systems and a video digitizing system.

CD: Need multimedia PC including CD player/writer, sound card, good video graphics for hardware including sound producing system; software needs include an authoring tool (Director, etc.) plus sound (SoundForge) and video editing (Premiere) systems and a video digitizing system.

  5. Describe the hardware and software that will be needed to deliver this multimedia advertisement.

Internet: Need PC for web server and streaming video server, Internet connection, web server and streaming video server software.

CD: Need multimedia PC including CD player, sound card & speakers, good video graphics for hardware. Software for viewing video and sound.

42. From your previous experience, the discussions in class, and the material in chapter 2, write a set of rules for the use of sound in a multimedia production. You may make a simple list of do's and don'ts, or you may expand the list to include some explanatory material and discussion. Try to make your rules as practical and helpful for a multimedia developer as possible.

  1. Use sound that is effective; don't add sound without having a reason for it.
  2. Take into account reflection and reverberation when incorporating sound.
  3. Strike a balance between reverberation and definition.
  4. Use Doppler effect to add sense of motion and reality if necessary.
  5. If identification of sounds is important, ensure sufficient fidelity and bandwidth.
  6. Provide option to off sound.
