CPSC 1301 - Computer Science I Lab 1

Evaluating Computer Systems

due January 19, 2007 (9 a.m.)

Objectives:

  1. To be able to evaluate the components of a computer system.
  2. To be able to select the "best" computer system.

Methods:

  1. Visit a computer store, look at computer magazines and web sites to obtain information about computer systems.
  2. Fill out the PC Buyer's Checklist for all systems being evaluated. [You may not be able to answer all of the questions, but make sure your system includes the required software].
  3. Use your word processor and spreadsheet programs to do the final evaluation.

Recommending A Computer System

The Geek Daycare Center (GDC) has decided to purchase computer systems. The computer systems will be used by the teachers and students in the classroom for educational purposes. Each computer will be connected to the Internet. You have been asked by the director of GDC to recommend three computer systems for evaluation. The GDC does not have enough money to buy the most expensive computers but does want a computer system that will last for several years.

a) What would a school teacher and students need a computer for? Write at least five uses that they would have for a computer system.

b) What kinds of software are needed by school teachers and students? List the types of software that would be needed, based on 1).

c) What kinds of special hardware are needed? List the types of hardware besides the computer that would be needed based on 1) and 2). Use the Computer Buyer's Checklist to help with this.

Use spreadsheets and wordprocessing to tabulate the data on at least 3 appropriate computer systems. You may have to get different sources for the hardware and software. Select the systems (including software) from two of the three sources (magazine / newspaper ads or reviews, local computer store and Internet site). You must visit at least one local computer store to gain information on these systems. Make sure to include costs for all parts of the systems, both hardware and software. Also include any special features that are available with each system.

Recommend one of these computer systems and then use your word processor to outline your reasons for choosing this system over the others. Don't just say "because it's cheaper" or "because it's better". Explain your reasons. Make sure that this report is double-spaced and approximately 500 words.
