Network Devices
- Network Interface Card
(NIC), connectors (BNC, RJ45)
- Repeaters: device that
extends the distance of the network; no more than 3 repeaters between
nodes [Physical Layer]
- hub - multiport repeater
- bridges - used to
connect two or more networks that use the same protocol (smart repeater)
[Data-Link Layer]
- switch - multiport
bridge
- routers - network node
that forwards datagrams around the network; super-intelligent bridge (used
for connecting large networks; used to choose most efficient network path)
[Network Layer]
- gateway device that
performs routing functions, usually as a standalone device, that also can
perform protocol translation from one network to another.
- brouter - performs
functions of both router and bridge
- packet-switching - all
transfers are based on a self-contained packet of data; others are message
switching and line switching
Network Interface Cards
- make
sure it has the right type of connector (RJ45, BNC or AUI)
- make
sure it supports the right speed (some now support 100 MBps)
- NE2000
is the standard of compatibility although 3COMs are also standard
- check
bus type (ISA / PCI, MicroChannel)
- make
sure it has drivers for your NOS
Working with Hubs / Switches
- find
a central location for the hub
- the
hub requires power
- purchase
a hub that can be expanded
- hubs
can be daisy-chained (make sure the uplink is correct)
- computers
cannot be more than 3 hubs away from each other
- SNMP
(Simple Network Management Protocol) is only needed for large networks
