LAB ASSIGNMENT 1 - Installing Network Hardware

Materials Needed:

• Computer
• Network card
• Piece of UTP cable
• Two RJ45 terminals
• Wire strippers
• Wire crimpers

Activity

You and your partner(s) have just been hired by the FishNet Computer Company. If you have installed a network card, you may NOT touch the computer or card. You are to supervise and offer advice to your partners. Your first assignment is to install a network on the computers in the Lab. You will need to:

1. Build a unshielded twisted-pair (UTP) network cable.

1. Cut the end of the cable to the desired length

2. Strip the cable

3. Arrange the wires so that they lay flat in the proper sequence

4. Insert the wires in the correct pin channels

5. Crimp the wires

2. install one of the provided network adapter cards (located next to your computer) in one of the computers that does not have a network card already installed.
3. connect the computer to the LAN using the cables, terminators and Ts provided. If the card you install is a combo card (has an RJ45 connection), connect the computer to the network using UTP.
4. install the correct drivers for the network adapter card from Windows or the disk(s) provided.
