Help! The Network's Down
When Bad Things Happen to Good Computers
- Make sure that your computer and everything attached to it is plugged in.
- Make sure that your computer is properly connected to the network.
- Note any error messages that appear on the screen.
- Do a little experimenting to find out whether the problem is indeed a network problem or a problem with just your computer.
- Try restarting your computer.
- Try restarting the entire network.
My Computer's Dead!
- Is it plugged in?
- Check surge protector.
- Check On/Off switch.
- Listen for fan.
- Check outlet.
- Check monitor.
- Check cables.
- Check monitor adjustments.
Checking your Network Connection
- Twisted-pair - check light on NIC (should be steady)
- Coax - check to make sure network is properly terminated and "Teed"
- Replace cable
- Check hub
A Bunch of Error Messages Flew By!
Try Pause key(Hold key); Ctrl-NumLock; Ctrl-S; or F8 during boot
Time to Experiment
- Try another protocol (NETBUEI / TCP/IP)
- Try another computer on the network
- Try another computer with your ID
- Try logging out of the network and trying the operation
How to Restart Your Computer
- in Win '95 or '98, use ShutDown
- CTRL-ALT-DEL
- Reset button
- On/Off switch
- Unplug
How to Restart the Network
- Have users log off network and shut down computers (Make sure they save their work first.)
- Shut down the network server
- Reboot the network server. [Watch for error messages]
- Turn on each computer
