Shamim Khan earned his B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Applied Physics & Electronics from Rajshahi University, Bangladesh in 1977 and 1979 respectively, and his Ph.D. in Computation from the University of Manchester, UK in 1984. His PhD research was on digital image processing using a multiprocessor computer system.

Dr. Khan taught Computer Science at the National University of  Singapore and at Murdoch University in Australia. He is currently a Professor and Interim Chair of the TSYS School of Computer Science. 

Apart from computer vision, Dr. Khan's current research interests include the application of artificial intelligence techniques for knowledge representation and decision support and Computer Science education. He has more than thirty-five publications in refereed journals and conference proceedings. He was the Principal Investigator for a $1.5 million DoD contract awarded to CSU in 2011 and his team was awarded the US patent for a cognitive map-based tactical decision training system in 2013.

Dr. Khan has taught courses in artificial intelligence, database systems, graphical user interfaces, software testing, and computer simulation. He has supervised undergraduate and graduate research in a variety of areas. He was the founding Chair of the CSU Undergraduate Research and Creative Endeavors (SRACE) Committee. He has also seved as the Chair of the CSU International Education Committe and Assistant Director of CSU's Center for Global Engagement.
