Catalog Description of Course: Application of networking concepts related to the
management of local area networks. Includes topics related to repair, setup,
management, and maintenance of local area networks. (3 credits).
Course Prerequisite: CS352 - Computer Networks or BCIS420 Networking in
Business Environment or experience with Computer Networks with permission of
instructor.
Required Textbook(s): Introduction to NETWORKING 3rd Edition by Barry Nance;
QUE 1994.
General Objectives
1) The course will provide information to students on how to install, maintain,
and manage a Local Area Network
2) The students will learn the commands and setup used by the Novell NetWare
network operating system which will also provide some basis for adapting to
other systems
3) The students will learn the commands and setup used by the Microsoft
Windows NT network operating system which will also provide some basis for
adapting to other systems
4) The students will learn the commands and setup used by a UNIX operating
system.
Specific Objectives
At the conclusion of this course, students should be able to:
1) Install new options into a computer system and test each option; e.g., hard
disks and network cards.
2) Diagnose problems and make minor repairs to computer networks using
appropriate diagnostics software.
3) Explain and demonstrate how to correctly maintain LAN computer systems.
4) Setup and maintain an efficient hard disk for network use.
5) Identify and describe the different types of network topologies and evaluate
ways one may be preferred over the other.
6) Generate the software needed for the operation of the network; e.g., Network
shells, Network operating system, and Network diagnostics. Install the software
onto the network file server.
7) Setup directories, users, and user directories using network utilities. Provide
security for software and user files.
8) Administer the network by creating login scripts, printer definitions, control
programs (BATCH files).
9) Maintain the network by performing routine maintenance tasks.
10) Design an appropriate backup schedule for the network.

Instructional Methods and Techniques
1) The class will meet for three one-hour lecture/discussion periods either in a
classroom or computer lab.
2) The lectures should be conducted using state-of-the-art multimedia
techniques including a computer projection system.
3) There should be facilities for demonstrating software and access to computer
networks in the classroom.
4) The labs should stress hands-on applications by the students.

2) Outside reading from popular computing and networking periodicals like PC-
Week, PC-Magazine, LAN, etc.
3) Readings from documents found on the Internet
Evaluation
1) One midterm and final exam over the lectures and readings consisting of both
non-essay and essay questions.
2) Homework including lab assignments and/or frequent quizzes on material
discussed in class and lab.
3) The students would be expected to summarize their readings in a weekly
journal. These journals should be submitted electronically using the campus e-mail system.
4) Individual or Group Projects on Designing and Managing a Network
5) Research Paper on Network Management (for Graduate Students)
